Militant leader orders killing of journalist

Staff Report

PESHAWAR: A militant commander on Monday told his supporters to kill a senior tribal journalist following a news report about an attack on a vehicle belonging to security forces.

“Mangal Bagh, commander of extremist group Lashkar-e-Islami in the Khyber tribal region, ordered his followers through FM radio to kill me wherever I am found,” Nasrullah Afridi, who works with Mashriq and The News dailies, told Daily Times on Tuesday.

The journalist filed a story appearing on the front page of Mashriq on May 21, 2007, concerning an attack on a vehicle carrying security personnel in Bara, Khyber Agency, in which on paramilitary soldier was injured. The authorities suspected the Lashkar-e-Islami was behind the attack. In his order, the militant group commander also ordered a ban on the sale of Mashriq in Bara, Mr Afridi said.
